Led by June Machala, six Spokane competitors brought home as many medals from the USA National Masters Championships in Eugene, Ore., last weekend.

Machala earned half of them in the women’s 60-64-year-old age group. She earned golds in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and a silver in the 400 meters.

In winning the 5,000, she was timed in 21 minutes, 48 seconds and beat the reigning world champion in the process. She was clocked in 45:25 in the 10,000 and 1:24 in the 400.

“The short stuff (400) I’ve never done before; this was my first time,” said Machala. “I’m a road racer. My husband just told me what to do.”

Husband Joe Machala claimed the bronze medal for a third-place finish in the men’s 50-54 10,000 meters.

The silver in that race was earned by Jerry Graham of Spokane. He also was second in the 5,000 in the men’s 50-54 age group. He led most of the last 1,000 meters in the 5,000, losing by a second in 16:40, and timed 35:28 in the 10,000.

John Schulte was sixth in the men’s 45-49 10,000 (36:54) and Bart Haggin was 10th in the men’s 55-59 5,000 (18:57). Terry Kelly coaches the group.
