Russian Artist Featured In Workshop Promoting Understanding Of Cultures

“Understanding cultures through the medium of fine arts” is the theme of a free workshop for area teachers to be held Aug. 29-31 at East Valley High School.

Featured will be oil painter and mosaic artist Anatoliy Ivanovich Golubtsov, a graduate of the Moscow State Art Institute. Participants should bring oil painting supplies including canvases.

The workshop, sponsored by EWU’s International Field Study Program and the East Valley School District, will be held in the art room at EVHS, E15711 Wellesley, from 9 a.m.- noon. For information, call 927-3210 or 927-3221.

Other classes and workshops

Animal sculptor Gerald Balciar will teach a five-day workshop Sept. 13-17 at the Joseph Art School in northeast Oregon.

The hands-on workshop is one of series offered by the school for serious amateur and professional artists.

Nationally known artist Carol Orr will present a workshop on Landscape Painting in Watercolor at Corbin Art Center Sept. 22-24.

Orr has studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy and has presented workshops throughout the West. Cost is $149; preregistration required.

The Corbin Art Center will present “Hooked on Texture,” a fiber workshop with Gloria Crouse, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Attention artists

A variety of art and folk art forms are being sought for the first Post Falls Arts Sampler sponsored by the Post Falls Arts Commission and area businesses. The community exhibit will feature examples of painting, sculpture, fiberart, quilting, ceramics, wood carving, basket weaving and silverwork. On exhibit

The Momentum Gallery, N221 Post, features work by artists Virginia Carter, Margaret Gregg, Gina Greenwood, Wendy Franklund Miller, Michaelangeo Molea, Jennifer Rod and Greg Sheres through Sept. 10. A Reception for artists and public is Friday, 5-7:30 p.m. Exhibit hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m.5:30 p.m.

Among the local artists participating in the juried art show for the Eastern Washington Watercolor Society are Eleanor Marcus, Jo Simpson and Mona Blessum. Their work can be seen Sept. 6-29 at the Allied Arts Gallery, 89 Lee Blvd., in Richland.

Don’t miss the exciting new series of exhibits exploring Idaho’s past at Coeur d’Alene’s Museum of North Idaho. “Native American Experience and Early European Contact,” continues through Aug. 27.

Next up is an exhibit about early gold strikes and the Oregon trail.

For poets

The second annual Festival of Washington Poets will be held Friday and Saturday at Four Seasons Books at Carnegies, E302 Seventh, Olympia.

Activities include poetry readings at 7 p.m. and a free children’s workshop from 4-6 on Saturday. The event is co-sponsored by the Washington State Historical Society and Capital Museum and costs $2, with children admitted free. For information, (206) 786-0952.

Auditions

Washington Idaho Symphony Auditions will be Aug. 28 at the WSU Kimbrough Music Building, Room 224, for the following positions: all section strings, flute 2 or flute 3/piccolo, 3rd clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, percussion, keyboard (all permanent positions); and temporary positions for horn and trumpet. “Missing Faces” Aug. 3l, Sept. 9-10 at WSU’s Daggy Hall in the Wadleigh Little Theater at 8 p.m. The combination mystery and mythic drama written by faculty member William Shephard is designed for a cast of 12-15 actors, most of whom will play multiple roles.
