Volunteers Recognized For Donating Time To Scouts

Compiled By Mary Beth Bonner.

The following area residents recently received the American Silver Beaver Award from the Inland Northwest Boy Scout of America Council:

Vaughn Snyder, Douglas Whitney, Vern Erickson, George Gabriel, Lynn Hunt, Robert Gower, Malcolm Hain, Ali Hemmelman and Steve Twiggs.

The award recognizes thousands of hours the adults donated towards Scouting.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Inland Northwest Council received the Quality Council Award, which shows excellence in quality Scouting programs, membership and unit growth, attaining financial goals and unit service.

The Washington State University Student Team earned a $1,000 prize by capturing the division title at an annual construction management competition in Reno. The fivemember team worked overnight to put together a winning presentation in the competition’s commercial building division. Their plan, which includes cost estimates and construction schedule elements for a $12 million, 3-000-space parking garage, was rated tops by a panel of industry professionals.

Team members are captain Kyle Fry, Darhl Edwards, Jeffrey Mix, Dan Kemnitz, and Jonathan Whorley. Patricia Stovall served as alternate member and William Mincks was team coach. The team also returned with the Hensel Phelps Award.

The prize money will help support future programs for construction management students.

Brenda Fanning, of Fontana Original hair salon, was recently awarded with two hair cutting awards - one in Spokane and the other in Seattle. Participating in the Inland Empire and Washington State Cosmetology shows, she placed third in Men’s and Women’s Hair Cutting Competition.

For the second consecutive year, Spokane Civic Theatre was voted “Best Place for Kid’s Performing Arts Classes” by the readers of Family Magazine. Classes for children and adults are held three times each year.

Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington has selected eight Inland Northwest residents as delegates to the 1995 Washington State White House Conference on Aging: Gail Brown, Phyllis Everest, Linda Hodge, Marion Moos, Maria Hernandez-Peck, Ray Raschko, Nick Beamer and Kathleen Cope.

One-hundred residents attended the conference held every 10 years to develop recommendations on policies about aging for the following decade.
