Help Plan Area’s New Teen Center

Betsy Querna, Lc, And Sharma S

Here’s your chance to get involved in the community and on an issue that directly affects you.

Organizers for the Libby Teen Center are looking for interested teens to help plan programs and make decisions regarding the use of the center. The Libby center will be located at the closed Libby Middle School as a gathering point for teens.

Ideas so far include making Libby a place to go to study, play sports, hold dances, or just hang out. If you have other ideas, now is the time to let people know.

Four meetings will be held this month to gather input from teens. There are also applications (for teen board members) and surveys in high schools, junior highs and community centers. The meetings are: April 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the East Central Community Center; April 20, same times, at the West Central Community Center; April 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center and April 29 at the YMCA at 11 a.m.

Bored with American society? Yearning for a different culture? The Northwest International Cultural Exchange Association (NICEA) is presenting an opportunity to travel to Japan over the summer.

High school and college students will be matched with host families, according to interests and ages. Approximately two weeks will be spent with the host families, and the Spokane group will take a side trip as well. The projected dates are from late July to early August, and meetings will be arranged by Luanna Fields.

For more information or to find out when the meetings begin, contact Fields at North Central (353-5220) or at home (747-8063). You’ll have to raise part of the money yourself, but it’s a great chance to get out and see the world. You don’t even have to know how to speak Japanese!
