CV Effort In Vane; Shadle Wins

Ryan Vane hooked up with Jeremy Stuart to score two goals as the visiting Shadle Park Highlanders held off a late Central Valley Bears comeback to earn a 3-2 win in Greater Spokane League soccer Wednesday.
In other GSL games, Gonzaga Prep beat North Central 4-0, Ferris blanked Rogers 3-0 and Mead topped Lewis and Clark 2-0 to end the first half of the regular season.
Robert Riddle struck first for the Highlanders 1:30 into the Shadle-CV game, followed by Vane’s first goal at the 30-minute mark on a Stuart assist. Vane then connected with Stuart again for his second goal 36 minutes later.
The Bears (4 regulation wins, 2 regulation losses, 0 overtime wins and 2 overtime losses, 14 points) closed within one goal on scores from Marc Caldwell with 12 minutes left and Nathan Usher at the 79-minute mark, but CV would get no closer.
Shadle goalkeeper Russ Johnson collected seven saves while CV’s Derrick Adams stopped 10 shots. The Highlanders (2-5-0-1, 7 points) outshot the Bears 22-14.
At NC, Chad Zlateff scored his league-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season as the Bullpups (6-0-0-2, 20 points) beat the Indians 4-0 in a battle for second place.
The teams were scoreless until G-Prep’s Joe Ascolese scored his 11th goal of the season with 1 minute left in the first half. Zlateff then knocked in his first tally 5 minutes into the second half to put the game out of reach.
Zlateff’s second goal came at the 55-minute mark. Yer Vue scored the final Bullpup goal with 8 minutes left.
Goaltenders Brian Mullen and Peter Auffant combined for six Bullpups saves. Spencer Jewell had seven saves for the Indians (4-2-1-1, 15 points).
At Rogers, the Saxons won the battle of the GSL’s winless teams by blanking the Pirates 3-0.
Billy Sleeth scored two goals as Ferris (1-6-0-1, 4 points) outshot Rogers (0-8-0-0, 0 points) 22-7. Adam Brown scored the Saxons’ other goal.
At Mead, the Panthers (7-0-1-0, 23 points) stayed atop the GSL with a 2-0 win over the Tigers (2-4-2-0, 10 points).
Mead got on the board early, Jim Morton scoring his seventh goal of the year 6:30 into the game. Nick Hebb then added an insurance goal at the 22-minute mark.
Frontier League soccer
The West Valley Eagles grabbed sole possesion of second place with a 5-0 victory over the host Colville Indians.
Joe King scored two goals and Shaun Noggle added a goal and an assist to pace the Eagles.
Colville goalie Ben Miller stopped 10 shots and Tony Lazanis and Ryan Kuntz combined for two saves for the WV as the Eagles outshot the Indians 41-2.
