Antique Shop Owner Seeks Special Permit In/Around: Trentwood

Emi Endo Staff writer

A woman who wants to keep an antique shop in her barn has asked Spokane County for a conditional use permit for a home industry.

The retail business called No Place Like Home, 13409 E. Wellesley, violates county zoning law. The three-acre site is zoned urban residential.

Owner Penny Simonson wants to keep restoring and selling antiques and crafts in the barn near her house.

The retail business would be allowed if the county issues her a conditional use permit.

Simonson began selling collectibles in the large red barn last October.

Her next-door neighbor, Tom Tupper, then complained to the county planning department and building division.

Tupper and his wife said that the business decreases their property values and invades their privacy.

Tupper also said that Simonson remodeled the barn without proper permits.

The public hearing will be held April 12 at 10:15 a.m. at Spokane County Planning Department, Commissioners Assembly Room, Public Works Building, 1026 W. Broadway.

After the zoning adjustor makes a decision on the proposal, either party has 10 days to appeal.
