Walter Broschart Spokane

Funeral Mass for Walter J. Broschart, 70, will be at noon today at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Broschart, who was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., died April 3.

He had worked as an auditor for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

Mr. Broschart was a World War II Army veteran.

There are no surviving family members.

James Keefe Cheney

Memorial service for James L. Keefe, 59, was Sunday at Cheney Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Keefe died Thursday at home.

He was born in Alton, Ill.

Mr. Keefe had lived in Orange, Calif., and in San Jose, Calif., where he opened The Lightning Lawn Mower Shoppe.

He moved to Spokane in 1982 and worked as a small-engine mechanic.

In 1987 he opened The Lightning Lawn Mower Shoppe in Cheney.

He was president of the Flying Fools Radio Control Airplane Club in Cheney.

He is survived by his wife of three years, Naoma; three daughters, Patricia Keefe and Christy Erickson, both of Everett, and Kari Keefe of Pueblo, Colo.; two sons, James Keefe of Anaheim, Calif., and Jason Keefe of Antioch, Calif.; three stepdaughters, four grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Clarence Prothero Spokane

Service for Clarence Ray Prothero, 79, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Prothero died Wednesday.

He was born in Mesa, Ariz.

Mr. Prothero had lived in Reno, Nev., and served in the Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He moved to Spokane in 1946 and worked for the Washington Water Power Co. He later worked for Spokane Seed Co.

He is survived by wife, Marjorie (Frazier) Prothero; one son, Bill Prothero of New York; three daughters, Carmelita Ashby of Pendleton, Ore., Margie Green of Spokane and Idarae Miller of Aurora, Colo.; two brothers, Evan Prothero Jr. of Olivehurst, Calif., and David Prothero of Yuba City, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Avis Foster Elk

Service for Avis C. Foster, 84, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Country Church of the Open Bible in Elk. Burial will be at the Elk Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Foster, who died Friday, was born in Spokane.

She had worked as a typesetter and printer for Ainsley Box Co. in Spokane and retired in 1958. She was an honorary member of the Elk Homemakers Club.

Mrs. Foster is survived by her husband of 44 years, Ralph Foster; two daughters, Bonita McNamee and Dorothy Wright, both of Elk; one brother, Ralph Belden of Spokane; 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Wilma Young Spokane

Funeral Mass for Wilma C. Young, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Young, who was born in Burlington, Iowa, died Friday.

A homemaker, she had lived in Spokane for 81 years. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the altar society. She was a foster mother for more than 100 children.

Her husband, Leo Young Sr., died in 1976. She is survived by four sons, Leo and Joseph Young, both of Spokane, David Young of Chattaroy and William Young of Ocean Shores, Wash.; two foster daughters, Catherine Stone of Spokane and Charolette Fitch of Seattle; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Sheila Payne Spokane

Funeral mass for Sheila Payne, 52, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pius Catholic Church, Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Payne, who died Friday at Sacred Heart Medical Center, was born in 1942 in Spokane.

She was raised in Wallace and graduated from high school in Cottonwood, Idaho. She attended the University of Idaho.

She married William Tacke in 1966 and they lived in Cottonwood until his death in 1975. In 1979 she moved to Coeur d’Alene and in 1986 to Spokane in 1986, where she worked for Metropolitan Mortgage Co.

Survivors include three sons, William Tacke, Russ Tacke and Nicholas Harms all of Spokane; and one sister, Lucia Rolles of Anchorage, Alaska.

Grizzley Adams Bear Moscow, Idaho

Memorial service for Grizzley A. Bear, 61, was Monday at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash.

Mr. Bear died Thursday at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow.

He was born Edward Charles Jones, in Detroit. He served in the Army from 1955 until his discharge in 1960.

Mr. Bear moved to Harvard, Idaho, in 1972 and was as an antique dealer. He also mined gold, broke horses and was a woodsman. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

His wife, Salley Bear, died in 1993.

He is survived by one son, Edward Jones Jr. of Arrey, N.M.; two daughters, Kathy Valentine of Boston and Trudy Jones of Spokane; one brother, Bruce Jones of Prince George, Va.; five sisters, Betty Campbell of Manistique, Mich., Susanna McSwain and Donna Jones, both of Detroit, Jeanette Jones of Warren, Mich., and Judy Wirrick of Armada, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Joseph Rangan Spokane

Vigil service for Joseph Rangan, 80, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Rangan, owner of Associated Terrazzo Contractors, died Friday. He was born in Italy and came to Spokane 50 years ago. He ran an accordion school in Spokane before entering construction work. He was awarded an honorary membership to the Spokane Construction Council and was a member of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association. Some of his work is at Sacred Heart Medical Center, University City Mall, Washington State University and Spokane Falls Community College. Mr. Rangan was a member of St. Aloysius Parish and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Josephine Rangan; one daughter, Victoria Mantello of Spokane; one brother, Luigi Rangan of Portland; and three grandchildren.

Fred Harris Spokane

Service for Fred Delbert Harris, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla. Private burial will be at the Waitsburg (Wash.) City Cemetery.

Mr. Harris, a former Waitsburg resident, died Friday at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

He was born on the family farm near Waitsburg. A farmer, he was on the board of the Touchet Valley Grain Growers and the Agricultural Stabilization and on the Conservation Service Committee for Walla Walla County. A 4-H leader, he was a charter member of the National Cattlemen’s Association and a member of the Washington Cattlemen’s Association, Pioneer United Methodist Church, Walla Walla Grain Growers and Washington Association of Wheat Growers. He and his wife moved to Spokane in 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Rose Harris; two daughters, Freda Price of Walla Walla and Donna Harris of Spokane; one sister, Dorthe Pagnutti of Spokane; one brother, Donald Harris of Waitsburg; and six grandchildren.

Dale Severson Spokane

Memorial service for Dale A. Severson, 51, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Unity Church of Truth. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Fairbault, Minn., Mr. Severson died Friday from kidney cancer.

He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and received his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

He had lived in Spokane for 23 years and owned Severson and Associates, a marketing firm, for 14 years.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Sonya Severson Rose; one son, Joel Severson, and two daughters, Sarah and Jamie Severson, all of Spokane; two brothers, Aldon Severson of Minnesota and Paul Severson of Texas; three sisters, Dorothy Jarvey of Minnesota, Hazel Castillo of California and Jeanette Mattson of Minnesota.

Rosalie Kelley Spokane

Vigil service for Rosalie F. Kelley, 80, is planned for 5 p.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kelley, who died Friday, was born in Dunsmuir, Calif.

She lived in Rosalia, Wash., from 1949 to 1965, when she moved to Spokane. She graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing and was a registered nurse.

She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

Her husband, Larry Kelley, died in 1993. She is survived by two sons, Michael and Terry Kelley, both of Spokane; one daughter, Kathleen McCoy of Spokane; one brother, Jim Green of Coulee City, Wash.; two sisters, Mable Suskdorf and Isabelle Woods, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Walter Holling Spokane

Graveside service for Walter E. Holling, 84, will be at 2 p.m. today at the International Order of Oddfellows Evergreen Cemetery in Rosalia, Wash. Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Rosalia, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Holling, who was born in Waverly, died Friday.

He had lived and farmed near Plaza for the past 53 years. He was a lifetime member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge No. 231 and a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.

His first wife, Dorothy Estell, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Alma; three daughters, Diane Stentz and Joanne Morgan, both of Cheney, and Barbara Roecks of Spangle; one brother, Herman Holling of Fairfield; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

George Neff Spokane

Service for George Albert Neff, 76, is set for 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Neff, who was born in Everett, died Wednesday.

A small-engine mechanic, he worked for Country Homes Building Supply.

He was a 60-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Neff was a member of Moose Lodge 161, the Legion of the Moose, and Eagles Aerie 2.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Ruth Neff; one daughter, Linda Thomas of Spokane; three brothers, Rodney Bullock of Orem, Utah, Patrick Neff of Marysville, Wash., and Joseph Neff of California; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Earl Southern Spokane

Service for W. Earl Southern, 90, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hillyard Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, Mr. Southern died Wednesday.

In 1943 he moved to Montana to farm and worked as a roofer in Spokane during the off-season. In 1945 he opened Southern Roofing, which he operated until he retired in 1967.

Mr. Southern was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church and was a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by one son, Bill Southern of Otis Orchards; and his former wife, Beverly Southern.

Ervie Brown Spokane

Service for Ervie J. Brown, 83, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Fishtrap, Wash., died Friday. He owned Inland Fuel Co. From 1945 until 1949, and later worked for Boyle Fuel before retiring in 1972.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union No. 690.

His wife, Irene, died in 1988. He is survived by four sons, Floyd Brown of Greenacres, and Jerry, Kenny and Whitey Brown, all of Spokane; two daughters, Karen Reiner and Linda Brown, both of Spokane; two brothers, Everett Brown of Deer Park and Fred Brown of Spokane; one sister, Bessie Rennich of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Louise Becker Spokane

Service for Louise Becker, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at United Church of Christ. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Becker, a 53-year Spokane resident, died Thursday.

A homemaker, she was born in Ruff, Wash.

She is survived by three sons, Bud Becker of Otis Orchards, Marvin Becker of Post Falls and Gerald Becker of Veradale; one daughter, Gloria Hass of Alta, Calif.; one brother, Henry Hoefner Jr.; one sister, Bertha Schmidt, both of Wenatchee; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Eva Jo Martin Spokane

Graveside service for Eva Jo Martin, 66, is set for 2 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martin, a 31-year Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She was born in Texas and spent most of her life in Kettle Falls, Wash., and Spokane. She had worked as a cook in restaurant.

She is survived by three daughters, Margie Patterson and Melba Tye, both of Spokane, and Betty Jo McNamee of Kettle Falls; two sons, Bill and Melvin Haworth, both of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Esther Becker Spokane

Service for Esther Becker, 81, will be at 2 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. There will be private inurnment.

Born in Odessa, Mrs. Becker died Friday.

She graduated from high school in Odessa and was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Reardan, Wash.

She and her husband, Emmanuel Becker, moved to Airway Heights in 1970. He died in 1980 and she moved to Spokane 2 years ago.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen Schultz of Newport, Wash., and Lynette Becker of Airway Heights; two brothers, Ed Kuest of Odessa and Harvey Kuest of Soap Lake, Wash.; three grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Justin Moore Spokane

Memorial service for Justin J. Moore, 11, is planned for 5 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Chapel. Burial will be in Ione, Wash. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Justin died Saturday.

Born in Spokane, he died at the home of his caregivers, Kennith and Cathy Lagerquist.

He is survived by his father, Wyatt Stanley, one sister, Sarah Moore, and one brother, Shawn Moore, all of Spokane; and his appointed guardian, James Spurgetis of Spokane.
