County Receives Money
Thanks to the Refuge Revenue Sharing Act of 1978, the Spokane County Treasurer received a revenue sharing check for $28,918 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on April 7.
Under the Refuge Revenue Sharing Act, payments must be paid to counties based upon either threefourths of one percent of the fairmarket value of fee lands located within the county or 25 percent of net receipts collected by USFWS for certain activities permitted on fee lands located in the county.
In Spokane County, the USFWS owns 15,468 acres which are managed as the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge.
Funds for the payment were derived from the National Wildlife Refuge Fund, into which the receipts from permitted activities are deposited, but since the fund does not contain sufficient receipts to make the full payment, Spokane County has been receiving 77.1 percent of the total amount since 1980.
Spokane County can us the payment for any governmental use.
