Local Military People Receive Awards, Medals

The following local military persons have received awards: Sgt. Marryann Ramirez, daughter of Ali Johns, Spokane, received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for fulfillment of national objectives during peace and war. She is stationed with the Air Force at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Petty Officer 1st Class Scott McClelland, a 1986 graduate of Walla Walla High School, has been selected for the Navy’s new Seaman-to-Admiral program which leads to a commission as a naval officer. He is stationed with the Navy and will be schooled in Pensacola, Fla.

Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Perdue, son of Gary and Marie Perdue, Spokane, was selected as Sailor of the Year with Naval Air Maintenance Training Group Detachment, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash. He is a 1976 graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Cpl. Dale Swaffard, son of Dennis and Joyce Swaffard, Newport, Wash., received the Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Safety Award. A 1988 graduate of Newport High School, he is stationed with the Marine Corps in Yuma, Ariz.

Cpl. Clifton Hinson, a 1991 graduate of Potlatch (Idaho) High School, received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. He is stationed in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Sgt. Christopher Ellis, a 1989 graduate of West Valley High School, was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for outstanding performance. He is stationed with the Marine Corps in Cherry Point, N.C.

1st Lt. Matthew Busch, son of Tom and Margaret Busch, Colton, Wash., was recently designated a naval aviator. He is a 1987 graduate of Colton High School, a 1991 graduate of Washington State University and is stationed with the Marine Corps in Meridian, Miss.

Petty Officer 1st Class John Hensley, son of Edward Hensely, Chattaroy, received a Letter of Appreciation for superior performance. He is a 1981 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and stationed with the Navy in Lemoore, Calif.

Petty Officer 1st Class Norman Watson, son of Shirley and Norman Watson Sr., Kellogg, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He is a 1979 graduate of Kellogg High School and is stationed in Yorktown, Va.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin Hill, son of Jerry Hill, West Richland, received a Letter of Commendation. He is a 1991 graduate of Hanford (Richland) High School and is stationed with the Navy in San Diego, Calif.

Master Sgt. Candace Salzar, daughter of James and Anita Warren, Medical Lake, has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal. She is stationed with the Army at Spinelli Barracks, Mannheim, Germany.
