Search Expanded For Plane

From Staff And Wire Reports

Dozens of search planes and 15 military aircraft joined the search Thursday for a Civil Air Patrol plane that vanished on a flight over the Cascades from Auburn to Yakima.

At midday, the search was concentrated in the Bumping Lake area, near Goose Prairie and north of White Pass, said spokesman Bruce Thun at the Pierce County Airport, where the state Division of Aeronautics set up headquarters to oversee the search.

Jim Powell, 29, of the Seattle area, left the Auburn city airport in the Cessna 182 at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Thun said. The plane, due to arrive in Yakima at mid-morning, never arrived.
