Area Athletes Turn In Top Marks In Oregon Invitational Track
Washington State’s Jody Page, Eric Anderson and the Cougars’ 1,600-meter relay team were winners Saturday at the Oregon Invitational Twilight Meet in Eugene, Ore.
Page, a senior from Seattle, ran an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 14.04 seconds to win the 110 hurdles. Anderson ran a personal outdoor-best 1:49.49 to capture the 800. The men’s 1,600 relay team of Dominique Arnold, Jim Carkner, Anderson and James Swanson won with a time of 3:14.29.
Mead High graduate Jason Baskett threw a season-best 165 feet to place second in the discus. James Long, a sophomore from Redmond, placed second in the 10,000 in 30:27.39.
Central Valley product Annette Peters, running unattached, won the 10,000 meters in 31:44.38, the fastest in the U.S. this season.
At the Inland Empire Meet at Whitworth College, WSU’s Jim Pate won the javelin with a personal-best 200-6. Teammate Wade Barringer was second in the same event at 172-3, also a personal best.
Whitworth’s Dale Macomber won the 3,000 in 10:05.21 - more than 19 seconds ahead of the field. Teammate Andy Martin cruised in the 5,000, his 15:06.69 beating runner-up Jon Murray (15:11.19) of Eastern Washington.
Nate Carson of Whitworth won the 110 hurdles in 16.04 seconds.
The Whitworth men beat Eastern Washington 212-167 for the team title.
Wendy McVaugh of Community Colleges of Spokane improved her 1,500 time by 10 seconds, winning in a meet-best 4:52.33. Washington State’s Sheila Leach
easily won the 200, finishing in 26.86. Dana Pevovar (1:00.45) and Jenny Zenner (1:05.00) added WSU victories in the 400 and 400 hurdles, respectively.
Whitworth’s Rene Strong took the long jump at 16-4. The Montana women defeated Whitworth 171-124.
Football
Washington senior quarterback Damon Huard completed 11 of 17 passes for 309 yards - including an 80-yard scoring strike to Fred Coleman - for the No. 1 offense in the Huskies’ second spring scrimmage.
Junior running back Lavoni Kidd carried the ball 14 times for 117 yards and one touchdown to highlight the University of Idaho’s scrimmage in the Kibbie Dome.
