Spokane Students Serve As Legislative Pages

The following students served as legislative pages: Patrick McMonigle, an eighthgrader at Cataldo Catholic School, served in the Washington House of Representatives and was sponsored by Rep. Todd Miekle. He is the son of Denny and Jan McMonigle, Spokane.

Sara LaMunyon, a student at Shadle Park High School, served in the Washington Senate and was sponsored by Sen. Jim West. She is the daughter of Beth and Jim LaMunyon, Spokane.

Katie Watts, a student at Ferris High School, served in the Washington Senate and was sponsored by Sen. John Moyer. She is the daughter of Lynn and Jim Watts, Spokane.

Julie Shideler, a junior at Lewis and Clark High School, served in the Washington House of Representatives and was sponsored by Rep. Lisa Brown. She is the daughter of John Shideler, Arlington, Va., and Olivia Caulliez, Spokane.

Victor Orellana, a freshman at Lewis and Clark High School, served in the Washington House of Representatives and was sponsored by Rep. Lisa Brown. He is the son of Tom Karier and M. Ester Orellana, both of Spokane.

The following students had their posters chosen for the 1995 Poison Prevention Poster Contest and had their posters displayed on billboards in March. They are listed with their elementary schools:

Ronae Peacock and Marc Ungaro, both third-graders at Adams; Tacy Mitchell, third-grader at Ponderosa; Natalie Skaer, third-grader at Roosevelt; Ryan Heacock and Brittany Broyles, fourth-graders, and Joshua Leyk, fifth-grader, at Sunrise; Jacob Snizik, fourth-grader at Trentwood; Kyle Kiesel, fourthgrader at Ridgeview; Michael Allen, fifth-grader at University; Mary Beth Gaddy, fifth-grader at Hutton; and Raymond Kenyon, fifth-grader at Arcadia.

Dwight Merkel was the recipient of the Exchange Club National Program of Service Award. The Golden Deeds Award recognizes and honors unsung heroes in the community. He is cofounder of the Spokane Youth Sports Association which started in 1966, The group turned a 35-acre parcel north of Albi Stadium into a soccer field in 1974, and built a similar 17-acre sports complex at 46th and Regal in 1986.

Retired Spokane Community College instructor Virginia Van Camp recently received “exemplary status” from the Washington Community and Technical College Humanities Association, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the humanities. She developed curriculums for art history courses, helped design the first interdisciplinary courses at SCC, created a new humanities course, helped write two National Endowment for the Humanities grants, participated in campus committees to select art for buildings and created SCC’s first literary magazine.
