‘Daylight’ Will Let Stallone See A $17.5 Million Paycheck

From Wire Reports

Reports in the trades say that Sylvester Stallone has signed a deal with Universal Pictures that will fetch him $17.5 million (that’s more than the combined grosses of “Tank Girl,” “Born to Be Wild” and “Bye Bye, Love”) to star in an action pic called “Daylight.”

Described as “‘Die Hard’ in the Holland Tunnel,” “Daylight” is about an emergency medical worker who must rescue commuters trapped in the underwater Manhattan artery following a tanker explosion. Rob (“Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story”) Cohen is attached to direct, with shooting slated to begin in the fall.

Stallone is currently earning a $15 million paycheck for his work in Warner Bros.’ “Assassins,” and after he shoots “Daylight,” he’s commited to star in an as-yetundetermined Savoy Pictures project. For that one, he’ll get $20 million.

CBS nabs Streisand concert

One of CBS’ worst-kept secrets went public Thursday.

The network has acquired the rights to HBO’s “Barbra Streisand: The Concert” and will air the special on May 21 at 8:30 p.m.

CBS’ 2 1/2-hour telecast will include footage from a Streisand concert in Las Vegas, Nev., that didn’t air on HBO. Some of it features former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Mike Myers portraying “Coffee Talk” host Linda Richman, who’s a big-time Streisand fan.

The CBS show will feature 30 songs.

CBS will lead into the Streisand special with a 90-minute “60 Minutes.”

A CBS News spokeswoman didn’t know if the show would include a repeat of Mike Wallace’s June ‘94 interview with the singer-actressdirector.

‘Waterworld’ buzz better

Want to hear something good about Kevin Costner’s “Waterworld” for a change? Early screenings of the hugely expensive summer release indicate that a solid action flick has emerged from the problem-plagued production.

Of course, questions remain: Will it be solid enough to overcome all the bad advance publicity (and make a profit)? And does the public want to see a movie in which water surrounds all the action? Costner’s loyalists answer the last question with one word: “Jaws.”

Tarantino doing ‘ER’

Is Quentin Tarantino going Hollywood?

After guest-starring as Margaret Cho’s boy toy on ABC’s “AllAmerican Girl,” the “Pulp Fiction” director will be at the helm for an episode of NBC’s “ER,” to air May 11. It features Valerie Perrine as the mom of Dr. Lewis (Sherry Springfield)

Midler on ‘Seinfeld’

VCR alert: Bette Midler will pop up - maybe literally - on the season-finale of NBC’s “Seinfeld” May 18.

In the episode, the star of the fictional Broadway play “Rochelle, Rochelle, the Musical,” has a mishap when she steps up to the plate during her theater group’s softball game against a team including Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) and George (Jason Alexander.)

P.S. Serious “Seinfeld” fans may remember past references to “Rochelle, Rochelle,” “the arthouse film about a young girl’s strange erotic journey from Milan to Minsk.”

In “The Movie” (originally broadcast in January ‘93), Jerry, Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George and Kramer (Michael Richards) find themselves at a theater where “Rochelle” is playing. In “The Smelly Car” (April ‘93), George rents the movie from a video store.

Mary-Kate and Ashley busy

Mary-Kate and Ashley won’t have to hit the unemployment lines - or the school cafeteria lines, for that matter - now that “Full House” has been canceled.

The 8-year-old Olsen twins, who have been television stars literally since birth, will be moving on to a new ABC series currently planned for the 1996-‘97 season. No one is quite sure what the show will be about, but producers are scurrying around trying to come up with an idea that will keep their fans happy.

In the meantime, the girls are expected to star in a feature film from Warner Bros. and a line of home-entertainment products that should net them more than a pretty penny.
