Vanwert Says No In Mead’s Big Win

Mead pitcher Holly Vanwert threw a no-hitter while striking out six batters as the Panthers defeated visiting Lewis & Clark 19-1 in Greater Spokane League softball action on Tuesday.

In other GSL games, Rogers beat Ferris 6-0, University beat North Central 6-0, Shadle Park beat Lakeside 10-3 in a non-league contest and Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley were rained out.

The Bullpups and the Bears will play at 3:45 p.m. today at Central Valley.

At Mead, the Panthers (7-1) scored eight times in the third inning and grabbed another 10 an inning later in the five-inning contest. The Tigers are 1-7.

Vanwert got three hits to help her own cause on the mound and teammate Marci Meddock, who also had three hits, had a three-run homer in the second inning.

Mead’s win allowed it to stay in a first-place tie with Rogers (7-1) who defeated Ferris (1-7). Pirates’ pitcher Traci Moore moved her record to 7-1 and pitched a one-hitter.

At North Central, the Titans (6-2) used a Devan Bakken three-run double in the top of the sixth to break the game open.

Pitcher Jamie Fox pitched a three-hitter and struck out six batters.

GSL baseball

University moved into a first-place tie with idle Shadle Park after it defeated North Central 12-4 on the road.

However, Rogers wasn’t able to pull move into a tie with University and Shadle because the Pirates were beaten 9-1 on their home field by Ferris.

In the other game, Mead beat Lewis & Clark 4-3. The matchup between Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley at Seafirst Stadium was postponed. It will be played today at 4 p.m.

Titans catcher Scott Asan drove in three runs on three hits as U-Hi (6-2) showed no mercy scoring 11 of its 12 runs in the first two innings.

At Rogers, the Saxons (5-3) used rode a 10-hit attack which was aided by Robert Woodside’s 3-for-4 day at the plate.

The Pirates (5-3) were handcuffed as Ferris pitcher Joe Miller threw a two-hitter.

At Mead, the Panthers (3-5) managed to withstand a seventh-inning rally to hold off the winless Tigers (0-8).

East Valley at West Valley and Clarkston vs. Colville in a non-league contest were rained out.

In the only game played as result of the rain, Cheney beat Pullman 7-1.

West Valley at East Valley was rained out and will be played today at 4 p.m. and Clarkston vs. Colville in a non-league game at West Valley will be played today at 4 p.m/

At Cheney, the Blackhawks (6-3) closed to within a game-and-a-half of first place East Valley.

Cheney pitcher Tucker Urdahl struck out 14 batters and while he and reliever Bryan Miller combined to pitch a three-hitter against the Greyhounds (3-6).
