Coeur D’Alene, Post Falls Double Up Iel Opponents

Idaho preps

Coeur d’Alene scored four runs in the first game without the benefit of a hit to win 4-2 and went on to sweep the Friday Inland Empire League softball doubleheader with Sandpoint, taking the second game 8-3 at Coeur d’Alene.

Amy Maurer walked to force in what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning, and Jessica Varney drove in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the first game.

Kim Sigler (5-1) earned the win.

In the second game, Jessica Varney’s two-run double in the third inning gave the Vikings an early lead. Amber Orr followed a throwing error that would have been the third out of the fourth inning with a two-run single to stretch a one-run game into a 6-3 Vikings cushion.

Olson (2-3) held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way, and Mikin Gatten and Stacy Dawson teamed up to throw out Tangie Raynor at the plate in the bottom of the fifth for the win. Raynor was trying to stretch a triple into a home run on the play.

The Vikings are 3-1 in IEL play and 7-4 overall.

Post Falls 12-14, Lewiston 2-4

Sarah Atkinson belted two home runs in the first game of an IEL doubleheader to lead the Trojans over the Bengals in the first of two victories at Lewiston.

Kym Morrison tossed a two-hitter in the opener. Elizabeth Twidt went 3 for 3 for the Trojans (4-2, 4-7). Deanne Young and Brittany Murphy each collected two hits in the second game for Post Falls.
