Former Washington State University football players Chris Dyko, an offensive lineman, and Mark Ledbetter, a linebacker-defensive end, have signed with the Canadian Football League Birmingham Barracudas. Dyko is a 1984 graduate of University High School in Spokane.

Dale Samuels, Purdue University’s associate athletic director for the past 13 years, announced he will retire at year’s end. Samuels, 63, one of the Boilermakers’ all-time football greats, has served in various coaching and administrative posts at Purdue during the past 35 years.

Susie Maroney swam 58.16 miles in Sydney, Australia to break the women’s world record for a 24-hour pool swim. Maroney, a 20-year-old Australian, completed 1,872 laps of a pool in the suburb of Carss Park to break the record by 600 yards.

Gary MacGregor, who played five seasons in the World Hockey Association, has died of a heart attack. He was 41.

The Montreal Canadiens selected MacGregor in the second round of the 1974 NHL draft, but he decided, instead, to play for the WHA’s Chicago Cougars. His best year was 1974-75 with Chicago, scoring 44 times and adding 34 assists. He was named rookie of the year by the Sporting News.
