Local Students Qualify For National Debate Tourney

The following high school students earned the right to attend the National Debate and Speech Tournament held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in June. The students qualified by winning first or second place in their events at a qualifying tournament held in Cheney.

Cross Examination Debate - Sarah Stucky and Missy Longshore, Gonzaga Preparatory, first place; and Joseph Cutler and John Voight, Mead, second place.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate - Phil Koestner, Central Valley, first place; and Rachel Tompkins, Central Valley, second place.

Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking - Joseph Cutler, Mead, first place; and Sarah Stucky, Gonzaga Preparatory, second place.

U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking - Phil Koestner, Central Valley, first place; and Katie Schiffner, Mead, second place.

Original Oratory - John Voight, Mead, first place; and Jill Wallach, Mead, second place.

Dramatic Interpretation - Sarah Peterson, Mead, first place; and Jill Wallach, Mead, second place.

Humorous Interpretation - Sharon Hummel, Mead, first place; and John Osebold, Mead, second place.

Ralph Morgan, general manager of the Hampton Inn Hotel, was awarded the hotel system’s quarterly President’s Award. The award is given to individual Hampton employees who demonstrate outstanding guest service and attention to detail in their work.

Sara Marks was selected to represent the concerns and interests of private land surveyors as an advisory board member for the Department of Natural Resources. She has been branch manager and survey manager of the Spokane office of Wyatt-JayKim Engineers since 1991.

Traci McGlathery, daughter of Hal McGlathery, was named as a 1994-95 recipient of the Gertrude and William P. Schweitzer Scholarship. A junior majoring in political science at Columbia College in New York, she is a graduate of Shadle Park High School.

Matthew McElveen, son of Rosalee and Dennis McElveen, Spokane, has been awarded an $8,000 Gonzaga Leaders Scholarship from Gonzaga University. He is a senior at Mead High School and will attend GU in the fall.
