Whitworth, Central Split Doubleheader

The Whitworth Pirates used a solid offensive attack and strong pitching to hand the host Central Washington Wildcats their first shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader.

In the second game, the Wildcats rebounded for a 5-0 win.

UW guards defect

Washington guards Roberto Bergersen and Darren Mitchell have decided to transfer.

Bergerson, a 6-foot-5 freshman from Federal Way, averaged 6.4 minutes in 22 games. Bergerson reportedly wants to get away from home-town distractions.

Mitchell, a 6-2 sophomore, is transferring for academic reasons.

Track and field

Whitworth’s Dan Kepper won the decathlon at the Whitworth Multi-Event meet Tuesday and Wednesday, scoring 6,218 points. The NAIA national qualifying mark is 6,100.

WSU brawlers charged

Three Washington State football players allegedly involved in a campus brawl Feb. 22 were charged with obstructing a police officer.

Authorities Tuesday served summonses outlining the charges to Ali Evans, 19; his brother, Shaheed Evans, 21; and James Cage, 19.

The four charged in the case left the brawl and went to a restaurant, where Shaheed Evans and Cage climbed into the car of a friend, according to police reports. Authorities said Shaheed Evans and Cage told the driver to run over a police officer who had arrived at the scene and had been standing in front of the car.

The officer heard the conversation, pulled his gun and arrested the two for obstructing an officer.

Pac-10 women’s golf

Wendy Ward of Arizona State shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to capture her second Pac-10 championship in the last three years at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. Arizona State won its third consecutive conference title with a 6-under-858 total.

Epic streak ends

The Lewis and Clark College women’s softball team ended a 50-game losing streak with a 9-8 win over Concordia in Portland.

“We just haven’t had a very good talent level the past couple of years,” Pioneers assistant coach Mike Duffy observed.
