Winners Announced In Annual Quilt Show
The Palouse Patchers’ 15th annual quilt show entitled “Timeless Treasures - Victorian to Contemporary” was held April 1-2 in Moscow, Idaho. Ribbons were awarded in the following categories:
Hand quilting: Lois Roberts for “Untitled” white-on-white wall hanging; and Sallie Bell for large quilt, “Starry Path.”
Machine quilting: Fran Maki for both Idaho Wheat Commission wall hanging and Double Irish Chain large quilt.
Use of Color: Patrice Jacobson for “Wild Child” wall hanging; and Lillian Green for large quilt “Iris.”
Piecing/Patchwork: Sara Jane Perino for “Around the Island” wall hanging; and Patrice Jacobson for large quilt “Pineapple.”
Original design: Rosie Ferner for “Living or Survival” wall hanging; and Karen Schoepflin Hagen for large quilt “Call of the Cranes.”
Applique: Barbara Lambrecht for “Here Comes Santa Claus” wall hanging; and Karen Schoepflin Hagen for “Call of the Cranes.”
People’s Choice Awards went to: Karen Schoepflin Hagen for “Call of the Cranes,” first place; Sallie Bell for “Starry Path,” second place; and Peggy Waterman and Terry Huhta for “Palouse View,” third place.
Co-chairs’ theme awards: Cheryl Lee for “1994 Merry-Go-Round Medallion”; and Ann Jensen for “Jacob’s Fan of Flowers.”
Henry Kapteyn, assistant professor of physics at Washington State University, has been selected a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The grant of $30,000 will support Kapteyn’s research in the field of optical physics and high-speed lasers. His research group at WSU has designed the shortest-pulse laser developed to date.
Dr. Edmund Gray, health officer for the Northeast Tri-County Health District, was presented with the first Warren Featherstone Reid Award for Excellence in Health Care by Gov. Mike Lowry. After finishing medical school, he returned to Colville, Wash., and has worked to improve health care for rural residents since then.
Kendall VanHorne, son of Ron and Connie VanHorne of Spokane, has been accepted to Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, Calif. He has been a student at the University of Idaho and will be entering the doctor of dental surgery program along with 85 other students in September.
