Post Falls Legion Team Earns Spot In State Event
The Prairie Cardinals’ American Legion baseball team earned a berth in the Idaho state tournament with a 7-1 victory over the Sandpoint Lakers in a loser-out District I game Monday afternoon at Lewiston.
No other details of the game were made available.
The Post Falls team (29-25) was to play Trail, British Columbia, in the district title game late Monday.
Prairie would have to beat Trail, an earlier state qualifier, twice for the district crown.
The Cardinals remained alive Sunday with a pair of wins in loser-out games. The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen, meanwhile, defending district champions, saw their season end.
Prairie, which opened the tournament Saturday with a 7-6 loss to Sandpoint, rebounded Sunday with a 17-7 win over Moscow and a 7-4 win over host Lewis-Clark.
The loss eliminated Lewis-Clark, but the Twins will be at state because they host this weekend’s tournament.
Sandpoint followed its win over Prairie by upsetting L-C 3-2 before losing to Trail 9-4 on Sunday.
Trail took a 30-10 record into Monday’s title game.
CdA ended its season at 20-26, while Sandpoint finished 15-25.
No reports were received from the area teams during the weekend, which follows what became a customary practice this season.
Basketball
Former Lake City High standout Jennifer Kerns scored four points to help the North American Youth Basketball USA Parade High School senior girls “Blue” team defeat Chilton-Brillion, an all-star team from the Midwest, 94-84 in the championship final during the weekend in Milwaukee, Wis.
Kerns’ teammate, Summer Erb, a 6-foot-6 post from Lakewood, Ohio, who has signed with Purdue, scored a tournament-record 35 points.
Wrestling
Three North Idaho high school athletes earned All-American honors during the weekend at the Asics Tiger Junior National Tournament in Fargo, N.D.
Sophomore-to-be Jared Lawrence of Sandpoint placed third at 89 pounds; his brother, Brett, a senior to be, placed eighth at 114.
Kole Clauson of Lakeland, who has signed to wrestle at the University of Wisconsin, placed sixth at 165.
