Donor Assisted Others

Compiled From Wire Services

The liver donor for Mickey Mantle also donated organs to five other transplant patients and had saved a man from drowning shortly before dying of an aneurysm.

An official involved in Mantle’s June 8 transplant confirmed the Texas donor’s identity after the Dallas Morning News researched his name, the newspaper said in a published story.

But the donor was not identified to Mantle or other recipients after the donor’s family requested anonymity.

On the same day the 63-year-old Mantle’s wait for a new liver ended, five other life-saving operations happened almost simultaneously at the Baylor hospital with patients receiving a heart, lungs, kidneys and pancreas.

The donor was a small-town bank teller in his 20s.
