Wakefield Quiets Visiting Cleveland

Tim Wakefield won his ninth consecutive start to become baseball’s second 13-game winner and lead Boston to a 5-1 victory over Cleveland at Fenway Park.

Wakefield (13-1) pitched his A.L.-best sixth complete game to drop his major league-leading ERA to 1.61 and tie Baltimore’s Mike Mussina for the most wins. He allowed six hits, including Eddie Murray’s 14th home run of the year and 472nd of his career, as the Red Sox won their sixth straight.

Twins 5, Athletics 3

Minneapolis

Rookie Brad Radke held the Athletics to four hits through eight innings, and Kirby Puckett homered and doubled as Minnesota handed Oakland its fourth straight loss.

Angels 4, Royals 0

Kansas City, Mo.

Jim Abbott, breaking his Kauffman Stadium jinx, shut down Kansas City on six hits in seven innings, and Chili Davis singled, doubled and homered to lead California.

Yankees 11, Orioles 4

New York

Ruben Sierra drove in seven runs with a homer, double and single, and David Cone won his third straight decision for New York. Sierra’s three-run homer off Rick Krivda (0-1) in the sixth inning gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead and negated Brady Anderson’s 11th homer, a two-run shot, in the top of the inning.

Rangers 4, Tigers 1

Arlington, Texas

Kevin Gross scattered eight hits in eight-plus innings and snapped a three-game losing streak as Texas defeated Detroit. The 34-year-old Gross (5-11) had not recorded a victory at home since a 12-7 win over Toronto on May 17. He hadn’t won a game since beating Boston 7-2 on July 15.

Brewers 6, Jays 5 (11)

Milwaukee

Kevin Seitzer doubled home Jeff Cirillo with one out in the bottom of the 11th to give Milwaukee the win.

Toronto lost its fifth straight game and Milwaukee snapped a five-game home losing streak.

Clearing the bases

Dennis Martinez agreed to a one-year contract that will keep him in Cleveland for the 1996 season, his 20th in the major leagues… .

At Minneapolis, A’s pitcher Todd Stottlemyre was ejected from the game by first base umpire Joe Brinkman following a reversed balk call.

… California outfielder Tony Phillips began serving a three-game suspension. The suspension was assessed for an altercation with Boston catcher Mike Macfarlane on June 8… . The Angels set a club record by getting their 59th win in their 95th game. The 1989 club got to 59 wins in 97 outings… . Angels shortstop Gary DiSarcina underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, the Angels said Tuesday, and is expected to miss the rest of the season. . . . Second baseman Chico Lind, who walked out on the Royals without explanation on June 2, was called up Tuesday from Triple-A Vancouver. Lind may start tonight against the Royals.

Texas slugger Juan Gonzalez, eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list on Friday… . Toronto rookie right-hander Giovanni Carrara was struck in his left ankle by a line drive and had to leave the game at Milwaukee.
