Apartments Planned At Mission, Mcdonald

A Valley real estate developer is planning to build a 26-unit apartment complex on McDonald Road just south of Mission Avenue.

Prokey Arger of Arger Capital said the $1.3 million McDonald Place complex should be completed next spring. Construction is scheduled to begin this month or in early September.

Arger said his company chose the location because of its proximity to Interstate 90 and Valley Hospital and Medical Center, and McDonald Road’s expanding role as a major arterial.

“It presents itself to real good access,” Arger said.

And, it doesn’t hurt that more people are moving here.

“Right now, we see the growth as pretty positive, especially in the Valley,” he said.

McDonald Place will feature one- to three-bedroom apartments varying in size from 700 to 1,200 square feet. Rents will range from $475 to $695 per month.

Amenities for each suite will include a garage, full-size washer and dryer units and sound proofing. The complex will also feature a basketball court and possibly a recreational vehicle parking area.

“It’s more what you would expect if you bought your unit as a condominium,” Arger said.

Arger said he’s aiming McDonald Place at renters in the professional and semiretired demographic area.

“We’re looking for a nice niche in the market,” he said. “Somewhat upscale. We’re not looking to do cookie-cutter, high-density, mass-market apartments.”

G. Arger Co. Real Estate, owned by Gregory Arger, will manage the completed development.

Chinese restaurant opens

Dragon Garden, a restaurant specializing in Mandarin- and Szechwan-style dishes, recently opened at 4814 E. Sprague.

The building formerly housed the Far East restaurant, which closed last year. Dragon Garden is owner George Huang’s first business venture, but he is no stranger to the Spokane eatery scene.

Manager David Chen said Huang worked as a chef at several Chinese restaurants in the Spokane area. He’s now offering his favorite recipes on one menu. “He combined the good dishes from many different places,” Chen said.

The business is located in the same building as the Phase II Tavern. Chen said after July 1996, the tavern’s lease will expire, and that space will then become a banquet facility for Dragon Garden. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Wee Willie’s big move

Wee Willie’s Vacuums moved to a new location last week.

The longtime Valley vacuum vendor closed up shop at 9300 E. Sprague and moved to 314 S. Pines.

Spokesman Jim Moad said the store lost its lease. Owners of the old Willie’s building plan to use it for apartment and office space, Moad said.

The store sells new Eureka, Hoover and Panasonic vacuums, in addition to servicing and selling used vacuums from all manufacturers.
