At Mason, Ohio, Boris Becker, looking rusty in his first match since Wimbledon, wasted break point after break point resulting in a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) loss to Jan Siemerink at the ATP Championship.

Top-seeded Andre Agassi wore down injured Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic and pulled away 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

In other matches, Pete Sampras defeated Petr Korda, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3); Jim Courier beat Vince Spadea 7-5, 7-6 (9-7); and Sandon Stolle upset Stefan Edberg 6-3, 6-1.

At Manhattan Beach, Calif., top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain is in the third round of the $430,000 Acura Classic women’s tennis tournament, although she has yet to step on a court this week.

Kathy Rinaldi Stunkel had to default her second-round match against Sanchez Vicario because of food poisoning. Sanchez Vicario received a first-round bye. In other second-round action, No. 4 Lindsay Davenport topped Elena Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-4; and Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia upset No. 7 Mary Joe Fernandez 6-3.
