American Lance Armstrong zipped ahead in a tight final to win the San Sebastian Classic cycling race at San Sebastian, Spain, with second-place finisher Stefano Della Santa of Italy 2 seconds behind. Armstrong finished the 142.6-mile course in 5 hours, 31 minutes and 17 seconds.

America’s 400-meter men’s relay team shattered the world record with a time of 3 minutes, 15.11 seconds in the Pan Pacific Swimming championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center at Atlanta.

Quarter horse trainer J.B. Montgomery, who conditioned horses that won nearly $5 million over the last 25 years, has died of cancer at Ruidoso, N.M. He was 66.
