20,000 Deadheads Remember Garcia
All the psychedelic sounds and sights and, yes, the pungent smell of the Grateful Dead’s fans were in the air Sunday as about 20,000 people gathered to remember Jerry Garcia.
The memorial in the city’s Golden Gate Park was billed as a chance for fans to honor Garcia’s memory and move forward. A taped mix of the band’s songs had the crowd twirling and dancing - or crying.
Drummer Mickey Hart and other band members haven’t said whether the group will continue playing without Garcia, who died last week, but they urged the crowd to move on in the same peaceful, mellow spirit he espoused.
