Ordinance Would Affect Institutions

The city Plan Commission is set to consider an ordinance that would govern expansion of Spokane’s North Side hospitals, colleges and other large institutions.

The zoning ordinance would affect such institutions as Gonzaga University, Holy Family Hospital, Spokane Community College, the Spokane County Courthouse, and the neighborhoods that surround them.

The Commission is scheduled to debate and adopt the ordinance at its meeting Wednesday and would then forward it to the City Council.

Jeff Gombowsky, a VISTA volunteer at the Northeast Community Center, studied the proposed ordinance and prepared a report on how neighborhoods in Chicago, Seattle and Vancouver, Wash., dealt with tensions surrounding the growth of college campuses.

Gombowsky has been speaking to neighborhood steering committees about the proposed ordinance and his report.

He will brief the Chief Garry Park neighborhood at 7 p.m. today.
