Buckman Bucks Layoff Trend

Associated Press

Though corporate loyalty to employees is hard to find these days (remember when IBM used to brag about theirs, right before their massive firings?), a manufacturer of specialty chemical products offers job security for its 1,185 employees worldwide.

Buckman Laboratories of Memphis, Tenn., which grosses $250 million in sales, has a no-layoff policy that seems unique today.

“Over the past decade, while a broad range of both small and large companies have been forced to downsize to stay in the black, not a single Buckman employee has been laid off for fiscal reasons,” the company reports.

It’s company policy at Buckman to promote from within. The firm achieves a quality work force by requiring, and actually checking out, 20 references for most positions.

As the company points out: “The FBI only requires six references for their top position of special agent.”

And the FBI doesn’t offer a job guarantee, either.
