Honors For ‘Dangerous Minds’

Dan Webster Staff Writer

It was a week when the premieres dominated, with Michelle Pfeiffer leading the pack by impersonating an ex-Marine teaching in the inner city.

According to figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations Co., “Dangerous Minds” earned $14.9 million. Based on the book titled “My Posse Don’t Do Homework,” the movie earned a whopping $11,077 per location. Just behind, “A Walk In the Clouds” with Keanu Reeves grossed $9.5 million to claim No. 2.

Both debuts outearned Kevin Costner’s “Waterworld,” in just its third week and already fading. “Waterworld” earned $8.6 million, just ahead of No. 4 “Something to Talk About” ($8.1 million).

The week’s third premiere, “A Kid in King Arthur’s Court,” finished at No. 9 with a $4.3 million take.

Meanwhile, “Apollo 13” continues to rake in the profits. Now in its seventh week, the Ron Howard film earned $5 million, upping its total gross to $147.4 million.

And Sandra Bullock continues to sizzle. With “The Net” placing No. 6 with a $5.1 million gross ($31.7 for three weeks), while her romance “While You Were Sleeping,” in its 17th week, took in $824,301 to finish No. 17 ($77.9 million).

In contrast, in just its second week, the “Home Alone” clone “Bushwacked” faded fast. At No. 15, the Daniel Stern comedy earned just $1.2 million, leaving its total earnings at $5.9 million.
