Olson Shows O’S He’s Not Washed Up

Associated Press

American League

Once he figured out where to go, Gregg Olson showed the Baltimore Orioles that his right elbow is doing just fine.

Olson threw 2-1/2 innings of scoreless relief and pinchhitter Gary Gaetti led off the 10th inning with a home run, giving the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 victory Thursday in Baltimore.

Olson spent five full seasons with the Orioles before they released him after the 1993 season, convinced his ailing right elbow had rendered him ineffective. The righthander played briefly with Atlanta last year and had a brief tryout with Baltimore during spring training before opting to sign with Cleveland.

The Royals signed him on July 24.

Olson short-circuited a Baltimore rally in the seventh, then held the Orioles scoreless through the ninth. That set up Gaetti’s game-winner.

Clearing the bases

Detroit has won just one series since the All-Star break. That was July 25-27 when they took two of three from Oakland. … Cleveland’s Dennis Martinez recorded his 2,000th career strikeout when he fanned the Brewers’ Kevin Seitzer in the first inning. … Through 103 games this season, the Texas trio of Dean Palmer, Juan Gonzales and Will Clark has been in the lineup at the same time for only three games.
