Obituaries

Ted Nelson Spokane

Service for J. Ted Nelson, 54, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Open Bible Church of the Valley. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Nelson, who died Friday, was born in Olustee, Okla.

He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars in the Army.

Mr. Nelson moved to Spokane as an Army recruiter in 1978 and retired here in 1982. He lived a short time in Texas and then returned to Spokane in 1990.

He is survived by his fiancee, Gloria Gray of Spokane; three daughters, Lisa Samuels of Spokane, Catherine Nelson of Seattle and Lori Thomas of Texas; one son, Mike Nelson of Texas; his parents, Earl and Mildred Nelson of Texas; two sisters, Jeanette Bowder and Linda Plagen, both of Texas; numerous grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

John Sullivan Spokane

Graveside service for John Clifton Sullivan, 85, was held Monday at Riverside Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sullivan, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Friday at home.

He had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and Spokane International Railroad as a chief clerk in the engineering department. He retired in 1974 after more than 46 years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Sullivan; two sons, Dennis Sullivan of Fullerton, Calif., and John Sullivan of Spokane; one daughter, Janet Hodgson of Spokane; his twin brother, James Sullivan of Spokane; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Paul Peterson Hamilton, Mont.

No service will be held for Paul O. Peterson, 75, at his request. Private urn placement will be held at a later date. Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton is charge of arrangements.

Mr. Peterson, who died Saturday, was born in Sioux City, Iowa.

He served in the Army during World War II and worked as an electrical contractor in Spokane.

He moved to Hamilton in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Freda; three sons, Paul Peterson of Washington, Randy Peterson of Seattle and Corey Peterson of Spokane; four stepchildren and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Robert Reeder Athol, Idaho

No service will be held for Robert Reeder, 47, who died Thursday of a lingering illness. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Reeder was born in San Bernardino, Calif.

Survivors include his wife, Sandi, at home; two sons, Robert Reeder of Athol and Edward Reeder of Post Falls; one daughter, Tina D’Myro of San Bernardino; one stepdaughter, Annie Gonzalez of Yakima; his mother, Florence Reeder of Realto, Calif.; one brother, Tony Reeder of Realto; four sisters, Karen, Sharon, Pat and Connie, all of California; and four grandchildren.

Ann Harris Spokane

Vigil service for Ann Katherine Harris, 89, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris, who died Friday, was born in Mandan, N.D.

A resident of Spokane since 1914, she graduated from Battle Creek (Mich.) College.

She served as a physical education teacher at Coeur d’Alene High School and as a director for the Spokane Women’s Athletic Club for many years. She then worked as a recreation supervisor for the city of Spokane Parks Department for 23 years. She had also taught arts and crafts at rest homes in Spokane.

She was a member of St. John Vianney Church, the We Care Group and the church prayer group.

Her husband, James Harris, died in 1978.

She is survived by two brothers, Joseph Schopf of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Larry Schopf of Mount Vernon, Wash.; four sisters, Mary Mott, Veronica Sweeney and Frances Schopf, all of Spokane, and Marguerite Kehoe of Mukilteo, Wash.; and four stepchildren.

Althea Sommer Spokane

Graveside service for Althea Sommer, homemaker, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sommer, 88, died Saturday in Spokane. Her husband preceded her in death in 1990.

She was born in Antioch, Ill., and raised in Atlantic, Iowa, and Tulsa, Okla.

She married Allan Sommer in 1926 in Oklahoma. Mrs. Sommer moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1952.

She enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening.

Survivors include two granddaughters, Nancy Skellenger of Spokane and Amy Miller of Post Falls; one grandson, John Stone of Hayden Lake, Idaho; five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Evonne Leason Post Falls

Memorial service for Evonne Charlene Leason, homemaker, will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls.

Mrs. Leason, 61, died Saturday at Kootenai Medical Center.

She was born in London, Minn., lived in Spokane for seven years, and then moved to Post Falls.

She married Benedict Leason in 1950 in Spicer, Minn.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Ben, at home; two sons, Terry Leason of Greenacres and Bruce Leason of Yorktown, Va.; four daughters, Susan Aukofer-Roff and Linda Crum, both of Spokane, Rebecca Earling of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Tammy Johnson of Rathdrum, Idaho; three brothers, Duane Bjork of Spicer, Arlen Bjork of Belgrade, Minn., and Nuvillo Bjork of Sunberg, Minn.; one sister, Neola Simonsen of Belgrade; 11 grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Thomas Lennon Kellogg

Vigil service for Thomas J. Lennon, a lifelong resident of Kellogg, will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Kellogg. Memorial Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, also at St. Rita’s. Shoshone Funeral Service and Crematory, Kellogg, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lennon, 67, died Saturday at Kootenai Medical Center.

He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1945 and married Mary Seely in 1947.

Mr. Lennon worked as an electrician for the Bunker Hill Smelter for 20 years and at King Electric, Kellogg, until he retired.

He was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 73.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, at home; one daughter, Kathy Russell of Coeur d’Alene; four sons, Danny Lennon of Spokane, Kevin Lennon of Post Falls, Jim Lennon of Coeur d’Alene and Terry Lennon of Libby, Mont.; three sisters, Catherine Laskey of Sacramento, Calif., and B. Patricia Wilhelm and Aileen Lennon, both of Kellogg; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Betty Woods Tacoma

Rosary for Betty Woods, homemaker, was held Sunday at the DeSmet (Idaho) Community Building. Burial Mass was held Monday at the Sacred Heart Mission Catholic Church. Burial was at the DeSmet Cemetery.

Mrs. Wood, 37, died Wednesday in Tacoma.

She attended schools in Seattle and Tacoma, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Mission Catholic Church in DeSmet.

Survivors include her husband of 12 years, Michael, at home; three sons, Christopher H. Randle, Michael Woods Jr. and Christopher C. Randle, all of Tacoma; two daughters, Rochelle Randle of Tacoma and Issis Randle of Seattle; her father, George Kelly of Seattle; two brothers, Richard Stanford and Benny Kelly, both of Tacoma; three sisters, Sharon Johnson of Spokane, Lovella Jones of Seattle and Helen Randle of Tacoma; and four grandchildren.

Shirley Pegram Veradale

Service for Shirley F. Pegram, 62, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Pleasant View Church in Post Falls. Her husband, the Rev. Walter Pegram, will officiate. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Salem, Ore., Mrs. Pegram, died Saturday.

She had lived in Spokane since 1979.

She served as worship leader and was a soloist at Glad Tidings Assembly of God from 1979 until 1988 and at Pleasantview Church of Post Falls from 1988 until present. Her husband served as pastor at both churches.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years; one son, Walter Pegram of Spokane; one daughter, Rebecca Gossett of San Jose, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Harold Johnston Veradale

Memorial service for Harold B. Johnston, 66, is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Opportunity Free Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnston, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday at home.

He graduated from high school in Plummer, Idaho. He also graduated from the University of Idaho and Washington State University graduate school.

He served in the Army for four years and in the Army Reserve for 16 years before retiring as a captain.

He taught high school vocational agriculture in Twisp, Wash., and Elma, Wash.

He also worked for the Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist before retiring in 1985.

He and his wife, Olive, moved to the Spokane Valley from Elma in 1971.

He was a member of Opportunity Free Methodist Church, the Eagles Lodge and the Men’s International Bowling Congress.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years; three sons, Mike Stout of Oxnard, Calif., Dan Johnston of Athol, Idaho, and Rick Donahoe of Hayden Lake, Idaho; two daughters, Shelly O’Guinn of Soldata, Alaska, and Cindy Stonecipher of Susanville, Calif.; one sister, Charlotte Orazem of Puyallup, Wash.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Gerald Furnish Page, Idaho

Service for Gerald “Jerry” R. Furnish, an Idaho native, will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nazarene Church, Kellogg. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Furnish, 83, died Saturday at Shoshone Medical Center, Kellogg.

He was born in Kellogg and graduated from Kellogg High School.

He married Svea Johnson in 1935 in Spokane.

He worked for the Bunker Hill Co. for 50 years.

Mr. Furnish was a member of the Elks Club and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of Kellogg; one son, Dale Furnish of Spokane; one daughter, Carol Knutson of Brooks, Alberta, Canada; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Nelson Lewis Spokane

Service for Nelson B. Lewis, 77, is planned for 10 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney. Burial will be at the Spangle Cemetery.

Mr. Lewis, who died Friday, was born in Winthrop, Wash.

He had lived in Cheney for 28 years and retired as librarian at Eastern Washington University in 1983.

He was a member of Cheney Community Church and the Lakeland Village Association.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth Lewis; two daughters, Marilyn Droz of Mukilteo, Wash., and Ruth Ann Lewis of Medical Lake; two brothers, Bernard Lewis of Omak, Wash., and Glenn Lewis of Ellensburg; and two grandchildren.
