Alabama A.D. Resigns

At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Alabama athletic director Hootie Ingram, reprimanded for his role in violations that resulted in probation for the Crimson Tide, resigned.

Ingram said he could no longer effectively serve the university following the NCAA’s “sharp rebuke.”

Ingram, who has been athletic director for six years, has two years remaining on his contract. The university said he will stay at the school, but in what capacity was unclear.

Gene Stallings is expected to remain as the football coach.

At Tallahassee, Fla., the NCAA delayed a final decision on its preliminary investigation into a $6,000 shopping spree by FSU football players during the team’s 1993 national championship season.

“I’m disappointed that it was not resolved,” said football coach Bobby Bowden.

“You see how tough they were on Alabama and it scares you,” added Bowden, who has never been sanctioned by the NCAA during 30 years as a head coach.

The Florida State probe centers around a November 1993 after-hours shopping spree at a local mall where several players received merchandise paid for by prospective sports agents.
