Jefferies Cycles As Phils Romp
National League
Gregg Jefferies became the first member of the Phillies to hit for the cycle in 32 years as Philadelphia thrashed Hideo Nomo and the Los Angeles Dodgers 17-4 Friday night in Philadelphia.
The Phillies, winners of eight of their last nine, battered Nomo in the shortest start of his major-league career. The other Dodgers pitchers didn’t fare much better as the Phillies collected 17 hits, including a grand slam by winning pitcher Jeff Juden (2-1).
Jefferies hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats, starting with a two-run homer off Nomo in the first. He added a two-run triple in the third off Nomo, a single off Jim Bruske in the fourth and a double off John Cummings in the fifth.
It was the first Phillies’ cycle since Johnny Callison did it on June 27, 1963 against Pittsburgh at Forbes Field.
