Maddux Ties Record In Atlanta Victory

Associated Press

National League

Greg Maddux is grabbing a bigger piece of history.

Already considered one of the best pitchers of his era, Maddux tied a major-league record Saturday with his 16th straight road victory.

“I didn’t know (about the record) until today,” said Maddux, who pitched a seven-hitter in the Braves’ 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in Chicago.

Maddux eclipsed the National League record of 15 straight road victories that belonged to him and Warren Spahn. Now he shares the major-league record with Denny McLain (1968), Cal McLish (1958-59) and Richard Doston (1983-84).

Maddux, a leading candidate to win a fourth straight Cy Young Award, has not lost a road decision since June 27, 1994 at Montreal.

It was the eighth complete game for Maddux and his second in a row.

Cardinals 5, Rockies 4

Denver

Danny Sheaffer hit his first career grand slam to cap a five-run ninth inning as St. Louis rallied to beat Colorado.

The Rockies missed another chance to move into first-place in the N.L. West, and also dropped one-half game behind Philadelphia for the wildcard lead.

Giants 2, Expos 1

Montreal

Matt Williams hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth inning, leading rookie Jamie Brewington and San Francisco past Montreal.

Marlins 6, Astros 2

Miami

Willie Banks pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time in his past 11 decisions as Florida handed Houston its ninth consecutive loss.

Reds 7, Pirates 6

Pittsburgh

Frank Viola blew a five-run lead in his first start in 15-1/2 months, but Reggie Sanders continued his big series with a homer and go-ahead RBI single as Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh.

Mets 7, Padres 6

New York

Rookie Bill Pulsipher came within one out of his first major-league shutout before San Diego scored six runs in the ninth inning and lost to New York.

Phillies 9, Dodgers 4

Philadelphia

Lenny Webster, playing in place of injured Darren Daulton, had three hits and two RBIs as Philadelphia used an eight-run fourth inning to beat Los Angeles for its eighth victory in its last nine games.

Daulton out for season

Darren Daulton, who injured his right knee Friday night, will undergo surgery late next week and is out for the season.

Daulton tore the anterior cruciate ligament when his right foot got caught in the turf while he was rounding second base against the Dodgers.

It is Daulton’s eighth knee surgery, but the first on his right knee.

Clearing the bases

The Mets are 8-3 on their 12-game homestand, the first time they’ve won that many in a homestand since 1989. … Dodger Mike Piazza has been charged with catcher’s interference in each of the last two games. Those are the only times Piazza has had interference called on him this season.
