Rubin Comes Back To Win
Chanda Rubin lost a gritty first-set tiebreaker, then won the next nine games en route to a 6-7 (8-6), 6-0, 6-3 victory over Bulgaria’s Magdalena Maleeva in the final of the Pathmark Classic in Mahwah, N.J.
The 19-year-old from Lafayette, La., won in 2 hours, 4 minutes, beating Maleeva, the world’s No. 7 player.
In Commack, N.Y., top-seeded Yavgeny Kafelnikov successfully defended his Genovese Hamlet Cup title by defeating Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands 7-6 (7-0), 6-2.
Kafelnikov lost only 11 points in his 10 service games and never faced a break point as he earned his fourth ATP Tour singles title of the year.
Top-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria saved three match points and went on to defeat Carlos Costa of Spain 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to win the $375,000 Croatia Open tennis tournament in Umag, Croatia.
