Charles Pluid Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Graveside service for Charles T. Pluid, 83, will be today at 11 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pluid, who was credited with hauling the first load of long logs into Bonners Ferry, died Sunday at home following an extended illness.

He was born in Eureka, Mont., and was raised in area logging camps and received his education in Eureka. He began logging with horse teams at a young age and became a full time teamster horse logger for his father in his early teens.

Mr. Pluid married Francis Huffman in 1932 in Kalispell, Mont.

He had worked for Lyons Construction Co., and later moved to Newport, Wash., working for Diamond Match. He bought his first logging truck in 1943 and moved to Boundary County. He continued logging throughout his life and lived in various parts of Boundary County. He retired in 1973.

His first wife died in 1960.

Mr. Pluid married Caroline Bennett Knox in 1967 and moved to the North Bench area near Bonners Ferry.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and gardening. He served for many years on the Grandview Cemetery Board. He also served on the Naples, Trail Creek and North Bench water system boards.

He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, at home; three sons, Charles ” Buster” Pluid of Hobart Bay, Alaska, Robert Pluid of Moyie Springs, Idaho, and Mike Pluid of Bonners Ferry; two daughters, Esther Phoenix of Laramie, Wyo., and Janetta Dudley of Colstrip, Mont.; three stepdaughters, Carol Juhnke of Kent, Wash., Sandra Mace of Oldtown,Idaho, and Helen Kramer of Bonners Ferry; two sisters, Lois Shanner of Kalispell and Jean Moen of Grants Pass, Ore; 31 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Helen Griffus Veradale

Memorial service for Helen M. Griffus, 85, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Valley Assembly of God. Inurnment will be in San Diego. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Griffus, who was born in San Diego, died Aug. 24.

She lived in Spokane for 38 years and had worked at Super Save Drug Store in the Valley.

Her husband, Howard Griffus Sr., died in 1977.

She is survived by one son, Howard Griffus Jr., of Livermore, Calif.; two daughters, Katherine Griffus of Cottage Grove, Ore., and Roberta “Bobette” Griffus of Veradale; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Patrick Knudtson Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Patrick Marion Knudtson, 81, will be today from 3-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Knudtson, who was born in Alberta, Canada, died Wednesday at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene with his family in 1914 and attended the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy.

He married Gertrude Mangold in Missoula in 1939. They lived in Coeur d’Alene and he began mining in the Silver Valley. In 1952, he became an electrician for Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Knudtson was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 486, the Masonic Lodge No. 24 AF and AM, the Scottish Rite, the Shrine Club and the Shrine Octocyclers. He loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, at home; two daughters, Frances Campbell of Stanfield, Ore., and Patsy Jeffries of Spokane; two sisters, Patty Brooks of Spokane, and Alene Young of Garden Grove, Calif; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Shriners Childrens Hospital in Spokane.

Rodney Kane Spokane

Service for Rodney Wayne Kaimianina Kane, 52, will be at Hawaiian Park Mortuary, Kaneohe, Hawaii, with burial at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Kane, who died Sunday, was born in Honolulu.

He had lived in Spokane for more than 20 years and had worked as a welder.

He is survived by one son, Michael Kane of Reardan, Wash.; and one sister, Eunice Kane of Kailua, Hawaii.

Maude Dale Rosalia, Wash.

Graveside service for Maude Dale, 90, will be at 10 a.m. today at International Order of Odd Fellows Evergreen Cemetery in Rosalia. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Rosalia Christian Church. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dale, who died Sunday, was born in Hopkinton, Iowa.

A homemaker, she was a member of Rosalia Christian Church, the Pythian Sisters and the Rosalia Garden Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Joy Buchholtz of Rosalia; two sons, Ed Dale of Rosalia and Bob Dale of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rosalia Christian Church or Tekoa Care Center.

Margaret Holton Sagle, Idaho

Graveside memorial service for Margaret Ann Holton, 85, will be held at the Roswell Cemetery in Parma, Idaho, on Saturday at 4 p.m. Coffelt Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holton, who was born on Chief Redbird’s Reservation in Oklahoma, died Monday in Ponderay, Idaho.

She grew up in Oklahoma and married Chester Holton in Caldwell, in 1934.

Mrs. Holton worked as a reporter for the Caldwell News Tribune and the Coquille Valley Sentinel in Oregon. She also had worked in Oregon with the Ground Observer Corp., was a transportation director for the Greyhound Corp., and a grocery clerk.

She retired and moved to Sagle in 1976. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed reading, writing and photography.

She was preceded in death by her husband, seven brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include one son, William Holton of Sacramento; and two daughters Patricia Wilcox of Sandpoint and Mary Wiley of Portland.

Emil Biermann Lind, Wash.

Service for Emil Albert Biermann, 81, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Lind. Burial will precede at 10:30 a.m. at Lind Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Biermann, a lifetime Lind resident, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lind High School and worked for the Works Progress Administration, the Adams County Road Department and several area farmers. He also worked for Lind Electric and operated his own shop as a cabinet maker and carpenter, before retiring in 1979.

He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife Velma; one brother, Ted Biermann of Lind; and one sister, Esther Rowe of Ritzville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Hope Lutheran Church or to Lind Emergency Medical Technicians.

Janice Steffen Spokane

Graveside funeral service for Janice Joan Steffen, 57, is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lind (Wash.) Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Steffen, who died Saturday, was born in Spokane. In 1994, after her mother died, she moved to Lind to live with her grandmother.

She graduated from Kinman Business College, and then began work with the Social Security Administration in Spokane. She retired in 1987.

She was a 38-year Spokane resident and had worked for the Benton/ Franklin County Council on Aging in Spokane.

She is survived by one aunt, Esther Rowe of Ritzville; and one uncle, Ted Biermann of Lind.

Louise Heitman Bellevue, Wash.

Memorial service for Louise Heitman, 85, was held Tuesday at Davenport-Edwall (Wash.) United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Heitman died Thursday in Bellevue, where she had lived for the past four years.

She was born in Frankfort, S.D., and moved to Davenport in 1950. She worked as the Lincoln County clerk for many years.

Mrs. Heitman was a member of Davenport-Edwall United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Harvey, died in 1982.

She is survived by one son, Richard Heitman of Spokane; three daughters, Doris Dodge of San Anselmo, Calif., Lyndie Kraus of Bellevue and Marilyn Reed of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arthur Schmidt Rosalia, Wash.

Service for Arthur Edward Schmidt, 77, was Wednesday at Rosalia United Methodist Church with burial at Pine City (Wash.) Cemetery. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmidt, who was born in Schrag, Wash., died Saturday.

He farmed in Deer Park and then worked for the city of Spokane, retiring in 1980.

He moved to Malden, Wash., in 1986 and was known for the wooden toys he created for children in the Rosalia area at Christmas.

He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Deer Park.

He is survived by his companion, Dorothy Harris; three sons, William Schmidt of Spokane, Michael Schmidt of Seattle and Thomas Schmidt of Elk; three daughters, Jeanette Blair of Spokane, Margie Beck of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sharon Kelley of Walnut, Calif.; two brothers; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Francis ‘Tuffy’ Parsons Harrington, Wash.

Service for Francis H. “Tuffy” Parsons, 78, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Harrington.

Mr. Parsons, who was born in Harrington, died Monday at home.

He graduated from Harrington High School.

He and his wife, Mary, lived on the family farm at Lake Creek near Harrington. He was a cattle rancher and retired in 1979. His wife died in 1988.

Mr. Parsons was a HAM radio operator.

He is survived by two daughters, Patty Tarbert of Davenport and Peggy Miller of Rocklyn, Wash.; one son, Darrel Parsons of Coulee City, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
