Mourning Beats Old Teammates

Keith Askins scored 16 of his 21 points in the final 2:35 of regulation and in overtime and Alonzo Mourning made his meeting with his old team a successful one as the Miami Heat beat the Charlotte Hornets 108-101 Friday night in Miami.

It was the fourth straight win for the Heat, who were paced by Bimbo Coles with 26 points. Mourning had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Willis contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Kenny Anderson scored 39 points, hitting a 3-pointer at the beginning of overtime to give the Nets the lead for good, and New Jersey finally won on the road.

Anderson was 17 of 19 from the line and Armon Gilliam added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who came into the game 5-0 at home and 0-8 on the road. Kevin Edwards had 20 points.

Bonus points

Discussions broke off in negotiations between the locked-out referees and the NBA. The league said the referees’ union called in the morning to cancel a scheduled meeting, and no new talks had been scheduled.

Damon Stoudamire, a point guard for the expansion Toronto Raptors, was selected NBA rookie of the month for November. Stoudamire averaged 16.3 points, 8.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game during November. He ranked first in assists, second in scoring and sixth in rebounds among rookie league-leaders.

Derrick Coleman, traded from New Jersey to Philadelphia Thursday, will miss the seven games between now and Dec. 11. Coleman hasn’t played since doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat in training camp.
