Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier won the 1995 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award from the Kentucky Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. Frazier beat out Virginia’s Mike Groh, Ohio State’s Bobby Hoying, Florida State’s Danny Kanell and South Carolina’s Steve Taneyhill.

Chicago White Sox reliever Scott Radinsky, who survived Hodgkin’s disease to resume his major-league career, was named the 1995 Tony Conigliaro Award winner. … Western Montana defensive coordinator Nels Kludt was named the school’s acting head football coach, replacing interim coach Marc Mauze, who stepped down earlier this week.

Michael Johnson, America’s sprinting star, claimed the Jesse Owens Award as the nation’s outstanding track and field performer for the second year in a row. He joins Jackie Joyner-Kersee as the only winner of the award in consecutive years . . . Baseball Hall of Famer Duke Snider, a longtime Brooklyn Dodgers hero and former Spokane Indians manager, was sentenced by one of his old fans to two years of probation and a $5,000 fine for tax evasion.

Arizona assistant football coach Rich Ellerson, who helped design the Desert Swarm defense, will be named today as head coach at Southern Utah State…. Fred Whitfield, of Hockley, Texas, roped a calf in a blazing 7.6 seconds to win the first round of calf roping in the $3 million National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
