Idaho Center Honored

University of Idaho senior center Eric Johnson of Cheney was named to the GTE/sports information directors Academic All-District VIII football team.

Johnson, a two-year starter, is majoring in mechanical engineering and carries a 3.39 grade-point average.

His name will be placed on the national ballot and he will have a chance to earn All-America honors. The team will be announced Dec. 19.

District VIII includes all NCAA Division I and I-AA football schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.

Men’s basketball

It was over by halftime. Literally.

Community Colleges of Spokane, which overwhelmed Mt. Royal 93-44 Sunday afternoon at SCC, scored more points in the first half than the visitors managed in the game.

The Sasquatch (3-1) rolled to a 45-17 lead after 20 minutes and got scoring from 11 of the 12 players they used.

Kyle York scored a game-high 18 points, netting 5 of 7 3-pointers in a 6-for-8 shooting night. Mark Hegbloom and Bobby Raiford divided 28 points.

For Davenport, the wait was worth it. For Columbia, probably not.

In Davenport’s opener, delayed by the school’s successful trip to the State B-11 football finals in Tacoma, the Gorillas beat visiting Columbia 52-36 Monday.

Christie Emery scored 10 of her gamehigh 16 points in the first half to help get the Gorillas started, and they used a size advantage and pressure defense to disrupt the Lions.

Josslinn Skidmore led Columbia (0-2) with 14 points, including 8 for 8 from the free-throw line, and 10 rebounds.

Elsa Jacobsen had 10 rebounds to lead Davenport in that category.
