Laurence Connell Newman Lake

Service for Laurence F. Connell, 74, was Tuesday at St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel in Trentwood. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Connell, who died Friday, was born in Spokane.

He worked as a furniture factory representative for 50 years. He traveled in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

He was a member of Gentlemen on Horseback, the American Legion, the Eagles and Elks lodges, and the North Idaho Mule Club. He served on the first ski patrol on Mount Spokane and was a volunteer for the Newman Lake Fire Department.

Mr. Connell served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; two daughters, Kitty Connell of Newman Lake and Sue Maghan of Newport, Wash.; one brother, Don Connell of Framingham, Mass.; and two grandsons.

Audrey Jackson Spokane

Service for Audrey H. (Martin) Jackson, 81, is set for 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jackson, who died Sunday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

She had worked as a secretary for the Department of Social and Health Services in Spokane for more than 30 years.

She was a member of Moose Lodge No. 161, the Sorelle Club and Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Jackson’s survivors include one daughter, Darlynn Sander, and one son, Delos Johnston, both of Spokane; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church.

Patricia Eakins Spokane

Visitation for Patricia E. Eakins, 81, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pines Mausoleum Chapel at the Pines Cemetery.

Born in Topeka, Kan., Mrs. Eakins died Sunday.

She had lived in Spokane for 53 years and worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center as a ward secretary.

Mrs. Eakins is survived by one daughter, Joyce Rougle of Otis Orchards; two sons, John Eakins of Spokane and Warren Eakins of Malibu, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret Engman Heron, Mont.

Memorial service for Margaret Elizabeth Engman, 40, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Clark Fork (Idaho) Baptist Church. Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Engman died Saturday.

She was born in Renton, Wash., and raised in Seattle. She moved to Clark Fork in 1986.

She married John Engman in 1987, and they moved to Heron.

Mrs. Engman enjoyed volunteer work and collecting deer paraphernalia. She also enjoyed her nieces and nephews and her two puppies.

She was involved with the volunteer ambulance, fire department, search and rescue, disaster services and Red Cross in Clark Fork and Heron.

Survivors include her husband; her mother, Patricia Provo of Clark Fork; four sisters, Danielle Smith of Orting, Wash., Maralyn Pearson and Linda Buxton, both of Clark Fork, and Lillian Funderburg of Seattle; one brother, Douglas Provo of Clark Fork; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Ingwald ‘Inge’ Mendenhall Ione, Wash.

Graveside inurnment service for Ingwald V. “Inge” Mendenhall, 70, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riverside Cemetery in Ione. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mendenhall, who died Saturday at home, was born in Columbus, Mont.

He graduated from high school and entered the Army, serving until 1946.

He worked as a diamond driller for Long Year, Havlic and Pend Oreille Mines.

He married Patricia Fear in Spokane in 1952.

Mr. Mendenhall worked for the Box Canyon Dam in 1955 and retired as a powerhouse operator in 1982.

In 1983 he went to work for the Alaska Port District for four years and then returned to Ione. He was involved with the development of the Ione Ski Hill.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Mendenhall is survived by his wife; two sons, Dale Mendenhall of Ione and Dave Mendenhall of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Gerald “Buck” Mendenhall of Absarokee, Mont.; and six grandchildren.

Benjamin Hallman Kellogg

Memorial service for Benjamin L. Hallman, 19, will be today at 2:30 p.m. at the Silver Valley Assembly of God in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service of Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hallman, who was born in Mountain Home, Idaho, died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Friday night near Kellogg.

In 1993 he moved to the Silver Valley from Alaska and worked as a laborer and brick layer in the Job Corps.

Survivors include his parents, Maurice and Judy Hallman of Haines, Alaska; one brother, Mark Hewitt of Caribou, Maine; two stepbrothers, John and Frankie Hallman, both of San Diego; three stepsisters, Eleanor Alvarado of Kellogg, Rosalie Hallman of San Diego and Jeannette Hallman of Modesto, Calif.; his great-grandmother, Helen Lohr of Colorado; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Wesley Ashton Naples, Idaho

Service for Wesley William Ashton, 72, will be today at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ashton, who was born in Denver, died Saturday.

He graduated from the University of Southern California with a major in business and accounting.

In 1948 he married Mary Crist. They later divorced.

He was an accountant for many years in California.

Mr. Ashton married Beth Allegretti in 1972 and retired to Naples in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark and Barton Ashton, both of California; two stepsons, Thomas Allegretti of Nevada and Philip Allegretti of Naples; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Axel Johnson Spokane

Graveside service for Axel Hokan Valentine Johnson, 94, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnson died Friday.

He was born in Sweden and immigrated to Ellis Island, N.Y., in 1924. He moved to Burris, Ore., in 1932 and then to Spokane. He became an American citizen in 1937.

Mr. Johnson worked as a civilian machinist during World War II.

He worked as a millwright in Spokane.

His wife of 55 years, Dagmar, died in 1982.

Mr. Johnson is survived by one son, Roger Johnson of Bellevue, Wash.; one granddaughter, one grandson and one great-grandson.

Eldin Anderson Spokane

Service for Eldin Anderson, 81, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in Hurdsfield, N.D., died Saturday.

He served in the Army in Italy and in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.

He moved to Spokane in 1949 and married Esther Bussard in 1966.

Mr. Anderson worked in the produce section of the Safeway warehouse for 29 years, before retiring in 1976.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years; three sons, Don Anderson of St. Cloud, Minn., and Dick and Dennis Anderson, both of Spokane; two stepsons, Larry Bussard of Newman, Calif., and Bill Bussard of Spokane; two brothers, Dave and Cordes Anderson, both of Spokane; five sisters, Inez Fandrich, Edna, Mildred and Delores, all of North Dakota, and Helen Scheck of Torrance, Calif.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
