Thompson Leads Nic To Victory

Troy Thompson scored 20 of his 22 points in the first half and visiting North Idaho College remained unbeaten through nine games by defeating Big Bend 105-90 in non-league men’s basketball Tuesday night. Kevin Byrne added 19 points for NIC, which opens Scenic West Athletic Conference play in the on Friday night at Utah Valley.

“I think we’ve made great strides since the beginning of the season,” Cardinals coach Rolly Williams observed.

Thompson led NIC with eight rebounds. Teammate Steve Helm led all players with eight of his team’s 28 assists.

NIC 65, Columbia Basin 51

North Idaho College used tenacious defense early in the second half to break open a close game against Columbia Basin Community College, and the Cardinals cruised to a non-league triumph at Christianson Gym.

Columbia Basin, of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, trailed by just 31-30 at the half.

But the Cardinals, led offensively by Shawna Rainer with 20 points and Tanya Kirk with 16 points and 11 rebounds, quickly built a 10-point second-half lead.

NIC, which got seven assists from Jaime Richards, forced 34 turnovers and committed 17.

Ann Radmall added nine points for the Cardinals, converting on 6 of 8 free throws as NIC hit 16 of 20 from the line.

Columbia Basin made it to the stripe just eight times, hitting four.
