Asu Track Coach Resigns

Compiled From Wire Services

Arizona State track coach Leonard Braxton, under investigation for alleged NCAA infractions within his program, has resigned “in the best interests of the student athletes and the program.”

Allegations against Braxton, hired in 1992 from Morgan State by former athletic director Charles Harris, reportedly involve improper transportation of athletes, payments to athletes, falsifying expense reports and varied recruiting violations.

At Morgan State, Braxton was director of an athletic department in which 10 of its 14 sports programs have been banned from postseason competition this academic year for NCAA violations between 1988, when Braxton took over, and 1994. The violations include use of ineligible athletes in track and seven other sports as well as an inappropriate recruitment payment. Ken Lehman, head coach of cross country and assistant track coach in charge of distance runners, was appointed interim coach.
