Devils, Isles Get Messy As N.J. Wins

Associated Press

NHL

Corey Schwab punched out Tommy Soderstrom and John MacLean beat him twice for goals as the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders 4-2 Saturday in game that included a fight between goalies.

Schwab, making only his second NHL start, skated the length of the ice and bloodied Soderstrom’s left cheek with a barrage of punches in 12-player, second-period melee that resulted in the ejection of Schwab, Devils teammate Bill Guerin and Darius Kasparaitis of the Islanders.

Kasparaitis sustained a lacerated right hand in the incident that started after Bill Guerin was checked into the boards by Islanders defenseman Rich Pilon.

“That kind of stuff happens in this game every now and then,” Islanders coach Mike Milbury said after the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak and extended the Islanders’ skid to three games.

Said Soderstom: “It was wild. I had my left glove on and he had two free hands. It was a pretty cheap trick from him. I never saw him coming. I was just trying to hold one guy on New Jersey. I was holding him with one hand and then he (Schwab) comes down. That’s hockey. I’ll get him back some day.”
