Green Sells Stars

Compiled From Wire Services

Dallas businessman Thomas O. Hicks has agreed to buy the Dallas Stars from owner Norman Green for $84 million.

The purchase will end months of talks between Green and a number of potential suitors and allow the National Hockey League team to retire debts estimated around $70 million.

“All the hockey fans in Dallas owe Norm a debt of gratitude for bringing the Stars to Dallas, but this transaction will . . . provide the foundation to build a real winner over the next few years,” Hicks said.

Green will remain on board for 10 years in a $5 million consulting agreement.

In Hartford, Conn., Whalers general manager Jim Rutherford said his team has no intention of moving to Cleveland and plans to stay right where it is.

A story published Sunday in the Arizona Republic said the possible move was on the agenda for this week’s meeting of NHL Board of Governors in Florida. The newspaper cited other reports as saying the league would allow the Whalers to move to Gund Arena.

In Ottawa, general manager Randy Sexton was fired by the Senators and replaced by Pierre Gauthier, who had been assistant GM of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

In New York, Colorado Avalanche center Peter Forsberg was named the NHL Player of the Week after recording four goals and eight assists.
