Gillam Puts Chiefs Close To Top Spot

Sean Gillam’s three-point night included the game-winning goal Wednesday night as the Spokane Chiefs moved to within two points of the lead in the Western Hockey League West.

The Chiefs assumed sole possession of second place - two points behind the division-leading Kamloops Blazers - with a 4-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos before 4,315 at the Arena.

Trent Whitfield had a pair of goals after John Cirjak scored for the Chiefs, who took advantage of a Swift Current’s manpower shortage with a barrage of power-play goals.

Spokane scored on four of six power-play opportunities.

The Broncos, who lost at Tri-City 4-2 on Tuesday night, were without two players and coach Todd McLellan, all suspended for their part in a brawl on Sunday night.

Swift Current left wing Jeremy Rondeau and right wing Tyler Willis are serving five-game suspensions for their roles in the melee in Lethbridge. In addition, high-scoring left wing Brad Larsen is off to the Canadian National Junior Team evaluation camp.

The Chiefs are without veteran sniper Jason Podollan, also in training with the national team.

The Broncos looked like a team shot full of holes in the first period, when power-play goals by Cirjak and Whitfield made it 2-0.
