Oates’ Career Night Leads Bruins Past Panthers

Adam Oates scored a career-high four goals Thursday night in Boston to lead the Bruins to a 6-4 victory over Florida and end the Panthers’ six-game unbeaten streak.

Oates scored twice in the second period and once in the third to turn a 2-1 game into a 5-1 blowout. But Blaine Lacher, making his first start for Boston in a month, gave up three straight goals in the third period to allow Florida back in contention.

Shayne Corson’s goal with 14:22 remaining in the game gave St. Louis a tie with Calgary.

The Blues had a chance to win when Ron Stern was assessed a 5-minute major penalty for slashing at 1:05 of the overtime period. But the Blues managed only two shots in the remaining 3:55.

St. Louis lost its one-man advantage when Geoff Courtnall was called for interference at 4:33.

Brett Hull, the Blues’ leading scorer, was sidelined with a virus.

Philadelphia

John LeClair scored two goals and Ron Hextall got his first shutout of the season as Philadelphia beat Tampa Bay in a fight-filled game.

LeClair, who has 10 goals and seven assists in six games against Tampa Bay since being acquired late last season, helped Philadelphia improve its record at home to 14-3-1 this season.

Hextall stopped 18 shots and lowered his league-leading goals-against average to 1.78. He improved his record to 11-2-1 and got his 11th career shutout, snapping the Lightning’s four-game winning streak.

Steve Konowalchuk knocked in Dale Hunter’s rebound 2:16 into overtime to give Washington a victory over New York.

Konowalchuck, who scored his first career hat trick Saturday in Winnepeg, had a pair of goals as Washington won its second consecutive game and its first in five overtimes this season.

Ken Klee had tied the game 3-3 on his fifth goal of the season, with 6:52 left in the third period.

Doug Gilmour had two goals and an assist, including the tie-breaking score in the second period, as Toronto downed San Jose.

Gilmour and Mike Gartner scored second-period goals little more than a minute apart to give the Maple Leafs a 3-1 lead. Gilmour added a second score with 12:47 remaining, deflecting a shot from Larry Murphy into the net for his 13th goal of the season.
