Inmate Convicted In Prison Deaths

Compiled From Wire Services

An inmate was convicted of murder and kidnapping Saturday in the deaths of a security guard and two fellow prisoners during a riot at a maximum-security prison.

The jury will reconvene next month to decide whether George Skatzes should be sentenced to die.

Seven other inmates died during the 11-day standoff in April 1993 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.

Fifty inmates were indicted on charges stemming from the riot. Of those, 42 were convicted and one has been sentenced to die. Two were acquitted, one case resulted in a hung jury, and the rest still face trial.
