In a conference call from Sweden, men’s tennis standout Stefan Edberg announced he will retire after next season.

Edberg, who will turn 30 next month, said he will play a full season in 1996, ending a 13-year career. The former No. 1 player in the world won only one tournament this year and dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in a decade.

Reigning U.S. figure skating champion Nicole Bobek has changed coaches again.

Bobek, 18, announced she has left Richard Callaghan, her eighth coach, to go back with Barbara Roles Williams, who was also Bobek’s second coach.

At Las Cruces, N.M., Lisa Branch scored 17 points to lead No. 24 Texas A&M to a 75-60 victory over No. 20 Mississippi in the opening round of the 18th annual L’eggs Women’s Basketball Classic.
