Sharma Shields Ferris

Looking for your poem or short story? Today was the day Our Generation had planned to run the best of the creative writing entries received during our Get Creative contest, but it’s been postponed to Jan. 3 instead.

Call 459-5456 if you have any questions.

Act out: High school seniors interested in the performing arts, take note! Debut Northwest announces that applications for its performing arts scholarship are now available. The scholarship, open to Spokane County class of 96’ers who are interested in the arts, will be awarded before the performance of the Imperial Chinese Acrobats Jan. 26 at The Met in downtown Spokane.

Deadline for the application is Jan. 1. You can find information at area high schools or by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Debut Northwest, P.O. Box 9409, Spokane, WA, 99209. For more info, call Wayne Larson at (509) 328-9767.

Your move: And for all of you who despise performing arts but love the game of chess, the Maryhill Museum of Art, renowned for its international chess collection, invites young Northwest artists (K-12) to create their own unique chess set.

That’s right, submit an original chess set for an exhibition between March 15 and Nov. 15, and your product may become famous. Sets can be a variety of materials - everything from paper to wood to “found objects.”

Sets may be submitted by an individual, team, classroom or chess club. Chess sets must be received by the museum by 5 p.m. Jan. 19. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate this project into their curriculum. Contact Colleen Schafroth at (509) 773-3733 for more information.

It’s true: Fact: Not many teenagers realize Spokane has a sister city in Japan. To increase awareness of the U.S./Japan relationship, and to form opinions about the country, the Consulate-General of Japan is offering its ninth annual essay contest on Japan.

Students in grades 9-12 in Washington, Montana or North Idaho can write an essay on one of several given topics and submit it no later than Feb. 16. High school social studies teachers and Japanese teachers should have forms available for students to scan the topics and information.

Prizes as fabulous as $500 and a round trip for two to Tokyo will fall into the hands of the top two writers.

If you have any questions, call Doug Kern at (206) 224-4373 or write this address: Consulate-General of Japan, 601 Union Street, Suite 500, Seattle, WA 98101, attention Doug Kern.
