Leonard Harmon Ferris Year: Senior Sport: Basketball Position: Forward

Leonard Harmon believes he and his Ferris teammates have a way to go before they can live up to the No. 2 preseason ranking bestowed on the Saxons by a West Side newspaper. Scary thought. The Saxons are off to a 6-0 start, with their last three wins over highly-regarded Kamiakin of the Big Nine and Mead and Gonzaga Prep, two of Ferris’ challengers in the Greater Spokane League.

“I think we’re playing OK,” Harmon said. “I’m looking forward to when we start playing really well. I think we have a long way to go. In our preseason games we played to our potential only a couple of games. The guys on the West Coast think we’re the second-best in the state right now. As a team, we don’t think we are, but we think we can be that good.”

Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said Harmon, a 6-foot-3 forward, has to play tough interior defense, rebound and score - both inside and outside - for the Saxons to fulfill their expectations.

“He probably has to think more about the defense and the rebounding,” Gilman said. “It’s natural for most players to be offensive-minded, but he’s been doing a good job. He’s working hard to be a complete player.”

Harmon has averaged 15 points and about 10 rebounds in the hot start.

“I think I have to be a little better on defense,” he said.
